    Response: While it my be argued that any analogy would be an improvement on the one quoted and contested in the post, I think one that is particularly effective is that digital artists' objection/rejection of AI companies training their models on their work is the same as a photographer rejecting a Stock Photo provider using their work without license. And still charging royalties on the use of those illegally redistributed photos. In the case of digital artists, it's even worse. Given the frequently opaque-by-design nature of these AI systems, often there is no explicit way for artists to prove that their digital works were used without consent. Maybe there would be some hope for redemption in legal systems recognising the validation of these claims on the basis of prompting the GenAI software with to 'generate images in the style of (that artist's name or username)' and the model producing generated works that are clearly in the same aesthetic/style of their original works.
